Noteblog 1-Goals for the course

Katie Kutney

I have many goals for the language arts component of this class. I am not as familiar as I want to be with the subject specific standards for elementary education. I hope to know them and use them more after this class. I have always been a little bit old fashioned when it come to technology. I usually think that the old methods work just fine because I am not very good at computers. I hope that the experience we will have in this class with technology will help to change my current viewpoints of the importance of technology in the classroom. I hope that by experimenting with it and using lessons and methods in technology that work and are easy to use; I will be much more comfortable with it in my future classroom. Through my previous TE classes I have started to develop my opinion on how I want to run my classroom and what things I believe in strongly. My goal by the end of this class is to have a well developed pedagogy. I think it is important to have strong feelings for the methods that you use in your classroom and why you use them. I hope this course will give me more insight into successful ways to manage the learning of my students. One thing I hope to learn from this course is how to make a thorough lesson plan that covers everything. I am an organized person and I know that lesson planning will be important for me but I need to know what the best method for creating a lesson plan is. I have always thought that I knew myself as a learner but I hope that focusing on this topic throughout the course will help me further understand how I learn best. I also want to learn the types of learners so that I can better understand the wide variety of students I will have in my future classrooms. These are some of my goals for this TE class. I hope that I can meet them all by the end of the semester.

Katie,

You have very good goals for this class. We will be talking about lesson planning and you will practice writing lessons and using the standards withint your lessons.
The technology piece is definitely a focus for this classroom. Unfortunately we don't have a technology classroom, but we will definitely try to incorporate it as much as possible.
I'm sure you will at least work towards meeting all of these goals, even if you haven't "mastered" them by the end. You also want to remember that your ideas and beliefs will continue to change throughout your teaching career, so you may never "master" teaching.

Katie – I feel the same as you on a lot of your goals for this class. I am not as well acquainted with the subject specific standards for elementary education as I would like to be or as I need to be to be a successful teacher. It is very important to be able to understand these standards and to know how to apply them in a useful and exciting manner for your students. I believe that one way to go about doing this is through the use of technology but I understand your hesitation about this. I, myself, didn’t see much value in it until I took a class which taught me a few different ways which I could combine technology across various subjects to engage my students and peers. Many teachers do not find much importance in using technology because it is true that old fashion methods work as well. Personally, I believe the true importance in using technology in the classroom relates to the fact that every day, the use of technology in our lives becomes more prevalent. As a teacher, I hope to find a balance of using technology while still teaching the old fashioned methods which every person should know (for example, writing rather than typing everything on a computer). I have the same hopes as you that this class will help me to ultimately develop a strong pedagogy, although I realize that as the years go on, I must be able to adapt my beliefs and how I use them in my class. I also feel the same way as you about the lesson planning! So far, we have not had much experience in this field, and I am becoming a little intimidated about developing successful and fun lessons for my student. I am sure that this class will teach us many valuable techniques and that we will be able to share our ideas to broaden our horizons. Hopefully this class will help to teach us all about the wide variety of situations and people we will meet as teachers.
